Jeffries' Petition Available for Downloading

We have obtained a copy of Dr. Jeffries' petition (which lists the allegations against the Univeristy and President Bullock) from the Dubuque County courthouse, and we have posted it on our download site.

Some of the interesting allegations mentioned in the petition include:
  • The University sent a letter to Dr. Jeffries on May 17, 2005 notifying him that he had received tenure (p. 2)
  • Dr. John Stewart announced at a faculty orientation meeting that one reason Professor Jeffries had been terminated was because he questioned the University's contract provisions (p. 4).
  • "The University breached its contractual obligations to Dr. Jeffries by terminating him without just cause, by failing to give him notice of termination as required by the faculty handbook, by failing to follow the required procedures in the faculty handbook and by repudiating its tenure contract with Dr. Jeffries without just or adequate cause" (p. 3).
  • Dr. Stewart also "likened Dr. Jeffries' actions to discovering that he has an 'addiction,' or had been inappropriately altering numbers in the budget" (p. 4).

Let us remember who Dr. Stewart was. He was chairperson of the department of communications in which President Bullock got his Ph.D. He was and is famous in his field but had no high=level administrative experience, such as assistant dean or assistant vice-president, to qualify him for the position he now occupies. I do believe one of the professors in the communications department also comes from the same department and institution as Dr. Stewart. Academic nepotism?

Nepotism...is that a problem @ UD? Why nepotism is a way of life at UD.
For example: Two members of the same family:
1. share the role of VP of enrollment management and public relations
2. share the role of VP of finance and auxilliary services
3. work in the same athletic department
4. work in the same academic department, altho one is a part-time instructor

In addition, there are other spousal arrangements, but at least they don't work in the same department.

Obviously to some, nepotism is not a problem @ UD, eventho many organizations have policies forbidding hiring practices of family unit members who might work in the same department.

Does the sharing of roles mean UD gets 2 people for the price of 1 or do 2 people collect high salaries for 1/2 a work load? i.e., double the # of administrators who get in the way of getting any work done?

Do Board Members know what is going on at UD? Do Board Members ask the difficult questions pertaining to the kinds of issues that are occuring at UD? I know during the last century, Board Members lost site of many issues that contributed to the downward spiral of UD's reputation. Is the same ignorance taking place today? I believe many Board Members are employed by businesses that forbid the kinds of employee activities that are occuring at UD. I wonder if Board Members really know what is taking place or whether they are being told one thing while another actually occurs.
